Wrapped

In Wrapped, utilitarian bubble wrap forms are explored, challenging traditional expectations of the glass medium. Cast glass sheets are pulled out of the kiln at 600 degrees and hot sculpted, pushing the material to its sculptural limits. More than an exploration of trompe l'oeil, these pieces subvert associations or protection in a material that can be both strong and fragile at the same time. These pieces are currently on show with Masterworks Gallery and Black Door Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Twisted

The undulating, oversized liquorice twists in Twisted were influenced by Simon's early days as a graffiti artist, with the sculptures' twisting and somewhat acrobatic forms expressing the muscular energy of tagging. Each twist wax is extruded from the same mould, and then manipulated manually during a 10 minute cooling window before being cast in glass. Available at Masterworks in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Gallery 33, Wānaka.

Are we there yet?

In Are we there yet? a familiar form is revisited, the powerpole Simon sculpted in glass as his first piece over a decade ago. Each of the unique works pay homage to the revered kiwi road trip, to which the powerpole is ubiquitous. He taps into a special type of nostalgia, recalling the back-seat games we played 'counting poles' out the window on long car journeys. Making this work he reflects on how powerpoles serve as a reminder to appreciate the journey rather than focusing only on the destination, a lesson poignant to both the physical and literal journeys we make in life.
